Microsemi and Broadcom Partner to Expand Next Generation Broadband Portfolio

Microsemi Corpora TIon (NYSE: MSC), a leading provider of differentiated semiconductor technology solutions for power, safety, reliability and performance, launched at the 2014 Broadband World Forum (BBWF) New Reverse Power Supply (RPF) technology, a key technology for FTTdp and G.fast deployments.

G.fast is a new xDSL standard that achieves 1Gbps speed on copper, with an expected maximum range of 250m. In order for G.fast to reach the highest data rate, a shorter loop length is required, thus requiring fiber to distribution point (FTTdp) technology. In some cases, these fiber distribution point units (DPUs) will require reverse power supply technology due to the location of the DPU and the national regulatory or economic reasons associated with the grid connection and the use of smart meters to monitor the grid. Microsemi's RPF technology for DSL applications was demonstrated at the BBWF forum for use with Broadcom CorporaTIon's VDSL2 and G.fast chipsets.

Iris Shuker, Director of Product Line Management at Microsemi, said: "We are pleased to take advantage of the company's proprietary technology in both DSL and remote power applications, and together with Broadcom to extend the product portfolio of Microsemis to the broadband market. For CPE The PD81001 RPF PSE is paired with the PD70101 RPF PD for DPU, based on proven technologies that are being standardized in ETSI and BBF, and is driving the rapid deployment of advanced DSL technology with backfeeding. Our solution Based on the metallic-signature handshake protocol and providing inherent reliability and cost advantages for Broadcom's DSL equipment, it surpasses more complex communication solutions."

Jim McKeon, Director of Advanced Product Marketing for Broadcom's Broadband Carrier Access, said: "Broadcom is driving an advanced DSL broadband solution with data rates of up to 1 Gigabit per second. The new RPF solution from Microsemi simplifies the deployment of FTTdp, allowing operators Reducing CAPEX will correspondingly promote the development of cost-effective DSL solutions."
